Part 79: Episode 4, Day 1, Investigation: Party Camera

Well that was pretty clear. We're already here, might as well keep digging around at Gourd Lake.

Sound: Realization

Yup.

I'm not sure it warrants a "wowsers," though.

Hmm. Probably not.

Sound: Light Bulb

"Samurai Dogs"...?

Uh, it doesn't look very open. Do we even have any money?

I bet they're great!

With a name like Samurai Dog, how could they not be?

The kids are all into "The Pink Princess" now.

I mean, like, y'know!?

(Nope.)

Wait, did that new show really get created, cast, shot, and aired all in the month or two since the last case?

Seems kind of tacky and abandoned. Let's look around.

Wow. Gourd Lake is really big.

Yeah.

Oh.

Well, a long time ago, they used to grow gourds here.

Whoa! No way!
Sound: Light Bulb

You know, like an hourglass shape?

Well, it is shaped like a gourd, actually. But that's just a coincidence.

Oh. Okay.

I don't even know what to say to that one.

The trashcan is empty.

At least the place is well maintained.

Either that, or no one ever goes here to generate any trash.

Huh... I almost didn't see that signpost.

Boat docks sound promising, if the murder really took place out on a boat.

A lineup of plastic benches.

I guess the idea is you buy a dog and eat it here.

Except maybe Maya... if she had a Samurai Dog.

Looks like there's something on one of these benches.

...And it goes "pop." Yeah, I know the ones. You see them a lot around New Year's.

Let's take them.

C'mon, admit it. You just want to pop them, right?

Was it that obvious?

I'm not sure why this choice is even here. Why would we not take them?

I suppose it couldn't hurt.

Huh? Where'd they go?
Sound: Realization

Into my pocket.

Sound: Select Jingle

Not what I would have expected for our first new piece of evidence.

quote:

Leaving them is an option, just not one that makes any sense.

Nah, let's leave them.

Aww, listen to your inner child a little, Nick!

(Maybe if your outer child would be quiet for just a moment, Maya!)

The poppers stay behind, but can still be picked up at any time.

A hotdog stand. It's closed...

The banner reads "Samurai Dogs"...

Somebody needs to redecorate.

Not going to stop for a vote here, let's keep looking around the park. Starting with the boats.

Nick... what is this place?

A boat rental shop. Closed for Christmas it seems.

I guess a murder taking place on one of the boats won't be good for business, either.

Guess we'll have to come back here on the second day of investigation.

Really? Well, how about we go out on one when the trial is finished?

Hey, good idea! You bet!
Sound: Light Bulb

Still no one to talk to, so all we can do is examine the scene again.

A small boat rental shop.

Doesn't look like anyone is around.

They're probably closed because it's Christmas.

I wouldn't expect the boats to get much use in winter in general, but I guess the lake isn't exactly frozen over.

There are some boats floating at the dock.

Was one of these boats used in the murder, I wonder?

Nick?

Huh?

Thanks? I guess it'd be too much trouble to actually peek in the boats and look for pools of blood, huh?

There's more forest off that way.

I doubt I'd find any helpful clues in there.

I'm sure it's completely impassable anyway, just like at the movie studio.

Well the docks were a bust, I guess we'll just have to wander through the woods.

Now that setup looks pretty suspicious.

We slide over to see a camping site right next to a "No Camping" sign.

Look... someone's camping!

They've got guts, camping at the scene of a murder.

Hey, hey, Nick!

Do they even know there was a murder? Although, maybe this is the witness Gumshoe mentioned. Would a gunshot wake someone up in the middle of the night, who's been sleeping in their SUV?

(That's true...)

Good call, Maya. Let's go talk to them.

This person isn't making themselves known, I guess we'll have to find them.

The trees grow quite thick here.

Further back, the trees fade into the shadow where the sunlight can't reach them.

More impenetrable woods.

This SUV has seen better days.

It's dented all over.

I can't believe anyone would drive their car down here.

How did that SUV get there? I guess our camper isn't there, either.

Hey, Nick!

What, don't tell me you're hungry again?

No, no.

They're light, heat up quickly and evenly, easy to clean, don't rust...

...

They didn't talk about that in any of the law books.

Phoenix, don't act like you ever read any law books, I've seen your reactions to Mia's collection.

(I'm not having this conversation...)

Looks like our camper wandered off mid-picnic? Lots of stuff just lying around. Maybe all the wild animals are hibernating.

There's food and some magazines on the sheet.

It takes a pretty tough skin to camp in this cold.

The sign says "No Camping."

Funny place to pick to pitch your tent.

...

I don't think they have signs like that.

Oh...

I like the idea of reverse psychology signs. Would a sign that said "No picking up litter!" make some rebellious individuals start cleaning up the park?

The only item of interest on the other side of the campsite is this odd camera setup.

This camera has a mic and some sort of attachment.

It must take pictures when triggered by a noise.

Sound: Light Bulb

*cough*

Sound: Realization

...Maya what are you doing.

...

Maybe I'm not saying it loud enough.

Sound: Damage 2

...

Huh.

Sound: Guilty x 4

Will you stop that?
Sound: Stab 2

Sound: Whack

D-don't kick it!

Maybe it isn't set to respond to voices?

You know what, fine, let's do it.

quote:

If we didn't pick up the party poppers, the previous two lines (and all of the following ones) get replaced with a single hint instead:

(It must not be set up to respond to voices.)

No advancing the plot until we pick those up and come back!

The party poppers...?

Sound: Weak Gunshot

Sound: Photo Snap x 11

... Well. It responded.

Oh hey, a camera aimed at the lake that automatically takes pictures whenever it hears a sound like a weak gunshot. Where else have we heard that sound effect before?

Sound: Objection

Sound: Whack

:ohdear:
